Hot Lunch

We are having some difficulties with students adding their names to our hot lunch order on a last minute basis. In order for us to run a cost efficient program (please remember that our lunches cost only $2.25 and $2.75 for a large) we must know in advance if you are having hot lunch for the day. We realize that occasionally lunches are forgotten and if that happens then please come to the office in the morning and ask to be added to the hot lunch program before the meal preparation has been done. If you are added to the lunch at the last minute we will have to charge an additional $1.00 surcharge to the meal. Thank you for your understanding.

Classroom News

Kindergarten
Ms. Blankenship

Please note the instructions for the Kindergarten Choir responsibility over the weekend in the music section.  Directions to the church are also there.

Friday the Kindergarten class will be having a hat parade. We are studying the letter H this week and will be wearing our favorite hats. Watch for us in the halls and classrooms and see which hat is your favorite.

We want to say a big thank you to the Clague family. They have donated a beautiful play kitchen for our classroom. We are enjoying dramatic play with it and so will many more kindergartners to come!

Grades 1-2
Mrs. Gaines

Please note the instructions for the First and Second Choir responsibility over the weekend in the music section.  Directions to the church are also there.

Get ready for the pumpkin farm. Next Tuesday is the day. We will be leaving school at 8:45 am and will plan a full day of farm activities. Have permission slips and money into the office. Parents, you are  welcome to join us, let us know if you will be able to attend. We’re riding the bus!

How are the reports coming along? First graders are working on farm ideas and second grade on the desert. If your information didn’t make it home last week ask for it again and also have your child bring a visual aid. Don’t forget to practice reading your report at home.

Mrs. Chamberlain brought her flour mill to our room to show us what happens to the wheat farmers grow on the plains of Colorado. Today we ate 100 % wheat bread with our homemade butter. Is anyone eager to taste some buttermilk?  We have some!

Grades 3-4
Mrs. Hansen

We are really into studying spiders and insects. We have quite the collection in our room. We will be pinning and displaying our collection.

Please contact the office to schedule a parent-teacher conference for Oct. 17th.

Grades 5-6
Mrs. Hodgson

Our first quarter ends today; however, students will have until Friday to get all of this week’s work and any corrections turned in before grade reports are made.  Attendance and Citizenship for second quarter will begin tomorrow.

Don’t forget that there will be no school next Wednesday, October 17, in order to accommodate for Parent/Teacher Conferences. If you haven’t scheduled a conference, please call the office.  I am also available for telephone conferencing if you are unable to make it to the school.

Grades 7-12

Mr. Wuerfel

7 and 8:
The Seventh and Eighth graders just finished taking their first English test today over their short story unit. Other than the typical weeping and gnashing of teeth, the students seemed to have done well.

Reading Monday was extremely fun! Each student presented their Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe reading projects. The projects included learning games, Narnia maps, essays, and written plays based on the novel.

9 and 10:
Bible projects are almost finished and the oral presentations will be presented on Monday of next week.

11 and 12:
The Scarlet Letter unit has begun with a bang! We’ve discussed the Transcendental Movement and its affects on Protestantism on how it plays into Nathanial Hawthorne’s American Novel. This novel will not only capture student’s attention but will have them debating and discussing ideas of community and its role in religion.

Drama:
The Drama team is well on its way for planning for the Orcas Island trip. This is going to be an amazing trip for these kids! We’ll be doing outreach activities in Seattle, church services at Orcas Island, plays and dramas for the academy there, educational field trips, and fun trips as well. The permission slips are being sent home today! We got an amazing deal on the flight!

7 and 8
This week we are watching a video on The Forbidden Book. It’s so interesting and our teacher is always answering our questions and listening to our discussion that it is taking us several days to finish watching it.

9 and 10
Geography today was our last day to finish up our projects. We worked in the computer lab to find more information and finish our power point. Our teacher was very impressed with the quality of work we have done. Our project will be presented to the class next Tues. and Thurs. We have asked some visitors to present to our class about their own countries. It will be exciting.

11 and 12
The book of John has helped us understand how much Jesus loves us and His gift of friendship. In John 15:15, Jesus tells us we are his friends. During government class we have been multi-tasking. While we have been doing our section reviews our teacher has played an audio dramatization of the challenges of writing and voting in our constitution.

Gymnastics
Yesterday we put the final touches on our mini-routine. We have acro, tumbling, ribbons, juggling, pyramids and a surprise. Today our coach is passing out our uniforms. We are excited to get both our uniforms and to get to go to Union College and participate in the clinic. We are leaving this Thursday morning at 8:30. Please bring a sack lunch for Thursday.

Parent Teacher Conferences

It’s almost time for Parent-Teacher Conferences again!  For grades K-6, we will be doing it the same way as last year.  Please come into the office to sign up for an appointment.  Appointments begin at 12 noon and run through 7:45 pm to try and accommodate everyone.  You will be given 15 minutes for an appointment.

For grades 7-12 we will have a different format.  It would make a very long day if each student was given a 15 minute appointment with each teacher now that we have 40 students in grades 7-12.  This year the format will be as follows:  all the upper grade teachers will be in the gymnasium.  You will sign up for an hour slot. There will be 5 families signed up in each hour. You will then be able to speak at 10 minute increments to as many teachers (there are 5) that you want to. You can move from table to table as there is an opening. Please respect the 10 minute limit. The tables will be placed at a proper distance to maintain confidentiality.  If you need a longer time, please make an appointment with the teacher on another day.

Cognitive/Genesis Survey

If your child is in grades 3-9 & 11, they have recently taken COGAT testing along with their ITBS testing.  In addition to the testing, each student has also done a survey.  Likewise, each family involved should receive a parent survey today.  The Seventh-day Adventist Church is conducting a 3-year study on education.  For your child to be included in the study, the parent survey must be filled out, sealed and returned to the office by October 16

School Family Directory

We are almost ready to print our school family directory.  If you have a change of address and/or phone since registration and have not given the updated information to the office, please do so as soon as possible.  We have a few families that prefer their home phone number not be given out.  If you fall into this category, please make sure the office knows this information, also.

Planned Absence Requests

So many of you are doing a great job of turning in planned absence requests when your student needs to be miss some school.

Just one reminder – just because you filled out a request, this does not mean that your student’s absence is automatically excused.  It is excused only if the reason for the absence falls into the categories listed in the school academic bulletin.  If you have any questions regarding this procedure, please don’t hesitate to ask.

8th Grade Fundraiser

Marilyn Lemke, a home based travel consultant, has offered to donate her commission from booking your travel and vacation needs, to the grade 8 class. Please contact her at 303 817 3752 or holidaytrip@aol.com  and ask her how she can help you with your travel needs. Thank you, Marilyn for your generous support.

Pathfinders & Adventurers

No Pathfinders and Adventurers on Oct. 17th due Parent Teacher Conferences.

The Adventist youth organizations will be hosting the Sabbath services at the following locations:

Oct. 13th:    Chapel Haven Church (in Northglenn)
Oct. 20th:    Boulder SDA Church

We will be performing skits and presenting music.  Please ask your Pathfinder or Adventurer if they have a part in the skits and help them to memorize their parts.  Also:  Please have Pathfinder/Adventurers bring their Class A Uniform. We need to see if all participants have complete uniforms.  Remember black sock and shoes.

Next week, Oct 10th, Pathfinders and Adventurers will be rehearsing at Chapel Haven Church we need the practice). Your children will ride the bus to the church and will need to be picked-up there at 6:00 pm If there are any problems please call John or Melinda at 303.659.1558.

Music Performance Schedule

Oct. 13 - K-2 Choir @ Chapel Haven Church – Students please wear church attire.  Please arrive no later than 10:00 am to warm-up and practice going up and down to the stage area.  The main service begins just after 10:30 am so we need to be on time.  This Sabbath is also Pathfinder/Adventurer Sabbath so there will be a lot of people there and room will be at a premium.  Your student will need to sit with you until they perform instead of sitting up front like we have done in the past.

In case you are interested, it is potluck at the church this Sabbath.  The menu is soup and bread.  Since they are getting ready for their big craft fair, the regular Fellowship Hall is not available for the potluck.  So, they are asking if you would like to participate in the potluck that you bring your soup in a crock pot so that it can be heated up downstairs.

If your student cannot attend on Sabbath, please come to the office and fill in a planned absence request.

Directions:  From the school, take I-25 south to 104th. Go West on 104th.  At Huron (about 1 mile) go left (south).  Stay on Huron until 99th.  The church is on the corner of Huron and 99th.
