Pizza
Pizza-by-the-slice started yesterday! The 8th grade class was busy trying to keep all the orders straight. In order to help them keep things as easy as possible, we request that you either buy a pizza card or send the exact change. This will help make their ordering easier next week. These students don’t have the time to miss class in order to make change. We apologize that there were some mistakes made on the first day. We will do better next week. Thank you.
Classroom News
Kindergarten
Ms. Blankenship
In the Kindergarten class we are studying the writings of another famous children’s author, Gene Zion. The most well known book is called, Harry the Dirty Dog. Children have so much fun relating to the antics of this family pet. The books are written from the dog’s perspective and although fiction they could almost be true stories.
Since we are reading books about Harry we will also be learning about dogs, their place in our world and how they help us. We will be having a special guest come to our classroom on Friday who weighs no more than 3 pounds but is a real dog. We will also be baking ‘dog bones’ on Friday. We will be eating the dog bones we make. Be sure to ask a Kindergartner about the tasty dog bones.
Grades 1-2
Mrs. Gaines
Snack Shack got off to a great start yesterday! We will continue to provide treats on Mondays. Each week, milk or a juice drink will be sold along with other items. Remember, each item sells for $.50.
Next week, on Tuesday the 18th, we will visit the Strawberry Patch in Brighton. The students will ride the hay wagon out to the field, and pick their own berries. We will ride the bus and eat lunch there. Please bring a sack lunch. Parents are welcome to come along.
Grades 3-4
Mrs. Hansen
Outdoor School Day is on Sept. 18th at Glacier View. Permission slips are going home today. Please let me know if you can drive for this trip. Parent drivers please indicate, on the permission slip, how many students you can take in your vehicle. Please remember to bring a sack lunch.
I will be sending home progress reports on your child. Some of our students are struggling with spelling, and some with memorization of Social Studies. I will outline each student’s progress for you, so you can see where your child needs help.
The state reports are due Sept. 28. There will be a grade of 0 for reports not turned in.
Grades 5-6
Mrs. Hodgson
A permission slip for Outdoor School is enclosed in today’s folder. Please sign and return as soon as possible. Although I like to keep Outdoor School activities a surprise for the students, I am happy to answer any questions parents may have.
Scholastic Book Club orders are due tomorrow! If writing a check, please make it payable to Sandy Hodgson.
Upcoming tests this week: Wednesday – Science, Chapter 2; Thursday – Social Studies, Chapter 14 (students have been taking notes in class – know the notes and pass the test!); Friday – Spelling and Memory Verse
Grades 7-12
Mr. Wuerfel
7/8 English/ Reading:
The Invalid’s Story by Mark Twain is assigned for Thursday. This story will have you reeling back with laughter. I recommend reading this aloud with your students. Also, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is almost half over with which will bring up our next genre of reading. Please go to the website and glance over the reading list. All of the books present on the list will be available at your local libraries and books stores, as well as our school library and class library.
Nine and Ten Bible and English:
The ninth and tenth graders are busy with their exegesis papers and learning the importance of researching Biblical texts. Also, their short story sections are going well. These students are looking deep!
Eleventh Grade English:
We have moved on to a new section in American Literature. Our unit Freedom Writers will view revolutionary literature while keeping true to historical accounts from Thomas Pain, Benjamin Franklin, and various other prominent historical figures.
Drama:
The drama team will be performing on the 28th of September at the Denver Youth Rally. They are working hard and it’s beginning to pay off!
Mr. Howard
Our third soccer game is this Friday at 1:00 p.m. in Brighton. I am only able to take three students with me so I am looking for volunteers to provide rides. Please call me if you can help. We will LEAVE Vista Ridge at 12:00. Also please be sure to have arrangements to pick up your kids by 3:00 if you won’t be able to attend the game. The game will be played at Benedict Park. To get there, take Highway 7 to Brighton. Turn right on 8th Street. After a few blocks, go left on Southern Street. Go about a mile and the park is on the left. (There are high school fields on the right – so don’t get mixed up!)
Mr. Force
Union College is having a GYM FEST, October 11- 14, at their campus this year in Lincoln, Nebraska. This will be a 3 day gymnastic clinic using some of the equipment and coaches from the University of Nebraska. 8 students from our Vista Ridge Academy “Flying Eagles” gymnastic team will be attending.
7 and 8 Bible
The student’s textbook this year is titled Becoming Like Him. Along with the Juniors and Seniors, we have shared the story of the Great Stone Face. We have discussed the importance of the principle, By Beholding We Have Become Changed. Ask your student to explain to you the significance of the front cover of their textbook. They may even be able to quote you a text or two.
9 and 10 Geography
This semester we are looking at “The World and its People”. We are studying the 5 major areas of geography in anticipation of our up coming reports on the different geographical areas of our world.
11 and 12 Bible
The Junior and Senior Bible class has four different textbooks, one for each quarter. This quarter we are studying the Gospel of John. We have discussed some of John’s reasons for writing his gospel such as -- “His word is as good as His touch” and
“Relationship is all about being together, spending time with each other, talking and listening, and doing things together. When you love someone, you want to spend time with that person. According to the Gospel of John, the most important relationship you will have is the one you form with Jesus.

S.A. News
Our first Dress Up Day is Wed., Sept. 26th. We are having a Farm theme. You can dress up as anything found on a farm such as a bale of hay, animal, silo, etc., etc. Use your imagination and let’s get creative!
Notice of Planned Absence Requests
If your student needs to come late or leave early or miss a complete day of school, we request that you come to the office in ADVANCE of the absence and fill out a form that requests such an absence. This is
a courtesy on your part to the teacher. Many times the teacher can rearrange a schedule so that your student does not miss an important activity such as a test, field trip or birthday party. You then take the form and discuss the planned absence with their teacher. You get the teacher’s signature and an explanation of any homework that would be missed. You then return the form to the office for processing their attendance.
Attendance/Citizenship Grade
After you turn in your planned absence notification, it is sent to the office for approval or non-approval. Please review in your academic bulletin the guidelines for an excused absence. The absence request form simply is a courtesy to the teacher and the school to notify them of an upcoming family event or appointment. It does not mean that the classes missed will automatically be excused. Sometimes, in response to an unexcused absence, you will receive in the mail a citizenship report stating your student lost a point or two for missing classes.
As long as there are not too many unexcused absences during a quarter, it does not affect your child’s citizenship grade that much. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call or stop by the office.
Administration of Medication at School
If your student takes ANY kind of medication during school hours, it must be monitored by the school office. This includes asthma inhalers. Please drop by the school office to pick up a form that explains the process. We need a physician’s signature and instructions. We are not allowed to give out ANY kind of medication to your student without these instructions including Tylenol.
Track and Field Day
Sunday, September 16: Track and Field Day is a required day of school. It begins at 8:30 am for warm-ups and the parade begins at 9:00 am. Record will be taken. We will be meeting at Legacy High School again for our annual activity. Plan to come, enjoy this family event. All students will be involved with the track and field activities and parents get to be the cheerleaders. Please bring a lunch. Legacy High School is located at 2701 W 136th Avenue in Broomfield. It is between Lowell Blvd and Zuni. More information is sent home with today’s newsletter.
School Supplies for 7-12 Grades
Last year, we had a problem with the amount of students that needed to “borrow” a pencil, pen or other item. Each 7-12 grade student is asked to deposit $10 at the office for future office supplies. When needed, they are welcome to come and purchase those items from the office. Any unused portion will be returned at the end of the year. 23 out of the 40 upper grade students have not done this yet!

The travel dates are March 12 – 20, 2008, during Mid-America Union spring break.
