No Caffeine, Please

Please do not send caffeinated drinks to school with your students who are in grades K-6. This added energy boost doesn't work well with students trying to focus in the classroom!

Classroom News

Kindergarten
Ms. Blankenship

Sunday, Sept.9th is Grandparent’s Day. The founder was a little old lady named, Marian McQuade. She wanted to champion the cause of the elderly in nursing homes and to encourage grandchildren to tap into the wisdom and heritage of their grandparents. President Jimmy Carter declared the Sunday after Labor Day to be a day to honor our grandparents and thus began Grandparent’s Day. This year the special day is Sept. 9th. The kindergarten class will be making cards for their grandparents. Remember to make that day special for your grandparents. If you aren’t lucky enough to have grandparents nearby then find a lonely elderly person who would welcome a visit, a card or flowers.

Grades 1-2
Mrs. Gaines

Last week we celebrated three birthdays: Tommy, Tamhelda and Aidan. That’s a lot of birthday cake!

Next Monday, Sept. 10th, Snack Shack will be open for business. This is a 1st and 2nd grade fundraiser. See the first page of the Aspen Leaf for more information.

We have P.E. on Tues. and Thurs. afternoons. This is a very active class so make sure your student is prepared with the proper clothes and shoes.

Reading logs should be returned on Wednesdays in the blue folder.

I am looking forward to visiting with parents this Thursday night.

Grades 3-4
Mrs. Hansen

We have spent the last two weeks finding the individual learning levels of each child. Because of this you will not see many papers in their folders this week.

Please be working on the State projects at home. They are DUE: Sept. 29.

We will have the Northeast State test, and Indian facts test Sept. 29 also. We do drills in class, but check your child and see what they know!

We are looking at possibly going to Miller farms in Platteville, CO, for a fall field trip, on Tues., Sept. 11th. I need parent drivers for this and for Outdoor School Sept 18th. Outdoor School is all day and Miller Farms will be most of the day also. Please watch for the permission form to fill out and return. Thanks.

Grades 5-6
Mrs. Hodgson

Our first Math Test is tomorrow!  Students should have all corrections for Chapter 1 turned in before the test. The Social Studies brochures were quite creative. One of the VRA high school history classes will be voting for best cover design.  The top three brochures will receive extra credit. A list of the week’s spelling words is in today’s folder. The test is on Friday.  We also have a memory verse test every Friday.  This week students should be studying Hebrews 4:16.  There is a grade report enclosed in today’s folder.

If your child is interested in ordering books from the Scholastic Book Club flyer, please have the order and payment (check payable to Sandy Hodgson) in by September 12.

Just a reminder, I will be gone this Thursday afternoon and Friday morning.  Mrs. Lujan will be our substitute teacher.

Grades 7-12

Mr. Wuerfel

**Parents:   For those interested, we will begin planning for a parent/ student book club as soon as possible. If you are a parent interested in joining this club, please e-mail me a schedule of week nights that would work best for you. I will compile the dates and find a time that suites most everyone. (I’ll do my best!)

Seventh and Eighth:
English and Reading classes are going well. Short Stories are being deeply analyzed and our grammar unit is well on its way. The Reading class is reading The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and pulling deep spiritual significance as well as understanding the elements of allegory.

Ninth and Tenth:
English is off to a great start as these high schoolers read their short stories. Bible class is well on its way with Exegesis papers beginning. Students will learn the importance of reading within context, significance of historical background, and use of commentaries. Thus far, students have learned far more than the days attended.

Eleventh Grade:
The Eleventh graders are finishing up with early settler literature and will begin reading oral based American Indian Literature and how it connects with American History.

Drama:
The drama team is working hard on their skits and plays and preparing for an excellent week of prayer. We also have a performance coming up September 28 at the Denver First Youth Rally.

Parent Night is coming up next Thursday, September 6th.  Home and School will again be hosting a potluck dinner at 6 pm.  More information is being emailed and sent home with each student. We look forward to seeing all of you at the potluck and sharing our favorite dishes with each other!

Elaine Huot, M Ed., D. Child Study will be presenting a short demonstration of the WYNN Literacy software program on Parent Night. This program is easy to learn and easy to use.  It enables students to actively process, analyze and synthesize information in all subject areas from 2nd grade to college level classes.

Administration of Medication at School

If your student takes ANY kind of medication during school hours, it must be monitored by the school office.  This includes asthma inhalers. We need a physician’s signature and a parents signature of instruction.  Please drop by the school office to pick up a form that explains the process. We are not allowed to give out ANY kind of medication to your student without these instructions including Tylenol.

Vista Ridge Planning

Parents are invited to join the VRA Board in planning for the future of the school. Those interested in joining the VRA Board for two strategic planning workshops on September 9 and 30, please contact Carol Schneider this week at 303-828-4944 for further details.

Track and Field Day

Sunday, September 16:  Track and Field Day is a required day of school.  We will be meeting at Legacy High School again for our annual activity.  Plan to come, enjoy and bring lots of energy.  All students will be involved with the track and field activities and parents get to be the cheerleaders.

School Supplies for 7-12 Grades

Last year, we had a problem with the amount of students that needed to “borrow” a pencil, pen or other item.  Each 7-12 grade student is asked to deposit $10 at the office to purchase school supplies from the office.

Calling the School

When your student calls you from the school, we have a special line that they use.  However, this line also receives faxes.  Because the line receives faxes, we do not answer that phone line.  When you return a call to the school, please call the main phone number, 303-828-4944 for best service.
