Ms. Blankenship is looking for a Fisher-Price Kitchen set for the classroom.  If your child has outgrown their set and you would like to donate the set to the Kindergarten classroom, please contact Ms. Blankenship.

Grades 1-2
Mrs. Gaines

Welcome first and second grade parents! We have a lively, energetic classroom this year. Three rules you can encourage at home to help your child’s school experience go well are for them to always: raise their hand to speak, stay at their seat, and walk in the hall and room.

For those who could not find the Primary Journal that was on the supply list, they may be purchased for $2.00 from Mrs. Gaines. We will begin using them this week.

Send a simple snack with your child each day. As we go to recess at 10:00 they usually need a little boost. Lunch is at 11:35, except for Friday. Remember to send a lunch each day. It will be a couple of weeks before hot lunches are provided.

A note of caution: we have a student that is extremely allergic to all tree nuts, especially peanuts. Do not send food items for Snack Shack, birthdays, or any classroom treats that contain nuts. If you are sending items that contain nuts in your child’s lunch please tell Mrs. Gaines or Mrs. Smith or include a note in your child’s lunch bag to be given to their teacher at lunchtime.

Our classroom does sponsor Snack Shack every Monday at lunchtime. The majority of the funds collected are put towards a mission project. We do need parent volunteers to help with this on Mondays for about 1 hour at lunch. If you are asked to provide an item for Snack Shack send it with your child that Monday morning. Good stuff to send: popsicles or ice-cream sandwiches, Rice Krispie Bars, Fruit Roll Ups, or Little Debbies. We charge students $.50 for each item purchased. Please check with Mrs. Gaines or Mrs. Smith if you have questions about Snack Shack.

Grades 3-4
Mrs. Hansen

Welcome to all new students. We’ve been testing in core subjects so students can be placed in groups. For social studies we are studying the Northwest states and the Iroquois Indians.

Thank you to all of you who have volunteered to help in this classroom.  Do to the fact that we have so many people that are willing, please notify the office as to when you are available and they will set up a rotational schedule.

Grades 5-6
Mrs. Hodgson

How exciting to have a full classroom!  We have 24 students; 11 fifth graders and 13 sixth graders.  It promises to be an exiting year as we learn together.  Our goal this year is to “Remember our Creator in the days of our youth.”

A classroom schedule is enclosed.  Students will be reading silently each day during Reading Workshop.  They can choose a book off our classroom shelves until we visit the school library or they can bring a book from home.  Ask your student how they can get easy extra credit (hint:  assignment sheets).

Pay special attention to the information sheet and survey about Outdoor School.  Please return the forms as soon as possible so I can assess the feasibility of going.  If you have any questions, please let me know.

Grades 7-12

Mr. Wuerfel

Classes are going well and students are off to a great start! We have some amazing students this year with some big potential.

7-8 English and Reading:
English students have begun with their short story units while reading students should be looking for the novel The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

9-10 English and Bible:
English students are working on their short story units as well. They will be given their first reading assignments today while Bible students will begin their first look at creation and the Bible’s reliability.

Drama:
Drama try outs are well on their way and team members name will be listed by the end of the week.

11-12 English:
We just began our American Literature unit revolving around early settler literature. They have also been divided into two teams and given their novel list for the academic decathlon.

Parents:
Parents, please view our classroom Web site at www.freeewebs.com/tonywuerfel All information and assignments can be viewed online. Again, please familiarize yourself with the site.

Fine Arts
Mrs. Helbley & Mrs. Force

It’s always fun to meet the new music groups and begin to see the potential involved.  Wonderful things can be expected from your students this year.  Please note the music performance dates on page two.

Notice of Planned Absence Requests

If your student needs to come late or leave early or miss a complete day of school, we request that you come to the office in ADVANCE of the absence and fill out a form that requests such an absence.  This is a courtesy on your part to the teacher.  Many times the teacher can rearrange a schedule so that your student does not miss an important activity such as a test, field trip or birthday party.  You then take the form and discuss the planned absence with their teacher.  You get the teacher’s signature and an explanation of any homework that would be missed.  You then return the form to the office for processing their attendance.

Administration of Medication at School

If your student takes ANY kind of medication during school hours, it must be monitored by the school office.  This includes asthma inhalers.  Please drop by the school office to pick up a form that explains the process.  We need a physician’s signature and instructions.  We are not allowed to give out ANY kind of medication to your student without these instructions including Tylenol.

Ice Breakers

Grades 9-12:  We will be going to Glacier View Ranch for the Ice Breaker this year.  We will leave at 6:00 pm on Sunday, August 26 from the Boulder SDA Church located on Mapleton Ave.  We will return to the school by 3:15 pm on Tuesday, August 28.  We will be doing team-building activities as well as having time to swim.  One of the activities will be the Ropes Course where students will be harnessed in and up in the air on a challenge course.  If you would like more information on the Ropes Course, please contact Miss Schneider in the main office.

Grades 7-8:  We will be leaving the school at 8:15 am on Monday morning, August 27.  Have your students wear sturdy shoes, jeans and a t-shirt.  It might be a good idea to bring a sweatshirt as well.  Students will also need to bring swimming suits and a towel.  We will return to the school at 6:00 pm on August 27.

Pathfinders/Adventurers

Final Registration for the Pathfinder Club and the Adventurer Club will be Wednesday, Aug. 29 immediately after school.  First day of Pathfinder and Adventurer Club activities will be Wednesday, September 5.

School Insurance

We are sending home a flyer on the school insurance policy.  Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the information it contains.  If you have any questions, please call the office.

Track and Field Day

September 16:  Track and Field Day is a required day of school.  We will be meeting at Legacy High School again for our annual activity.  Plan to come, enjoy and bring lots of energy.  All students will be involved with the track and field activities and parents get the honor of being the cheerleaders.

School Supplies for 7-12 Grades

A big thank you goes out to the parents that sent all the required school supplies with their students the first day.  Many, however, did not send everything; especially the Kleenex requested.  In a spirit of fairness, please send the Kleenex in as soon as possible.  Also, some of you noticed that a $10 deposit is required for each student in grades 7-12 for school supplies.  Last year, we had a problem with the amount of students that needed to “borrow” a pencil, pen or other item.  With the $10 deposit, a student is welcome to come and purchase those items from the office.  Any unused portion will be returned at the end of the year.

Calling in to the School

When your student calls you from the school, we have a special line that they use.  However, this line also receives faxes.  Because the line receives faxes, we do not answer that phone line.  When you return a call to the school, please call the main phone number, 303-828-4944 for best service.
