Classroom News

Kindergarten
Mrs. Tusken

This week we are learning about the season Fall.  Now is a great time to take family walks and let your child share with you all their new knowledge about this beautiful season!

Permission slips are going home today for our field trip to the pumpkin patch.  Please sign and return the form along with money.  If any parents would like to join us, please let me know.  Everyone is welcome!  We will be joining the 1-2 grade class and will be traveling on the school bus.  It’s going to be a very fun day!

Plans are underway to secure a substitute teacher for Mrs. Tusken by next week.  As soon as a candidate is chosen, we will be sending an introductory letter home to each of the kindergarten families.

Grades 1-2
Mrs. Gaines

We’ll visit the Anderson Farm next Wednesday.  We expect to leave school about 9:20 a.m. and return by 2:00 p.m.  Bring a lunch and wear appropriate clothes for the weather.  No open-toed shoes, please.  Mr. Britt will be driving the bus and the kindergarten class will be joining us.  The cost is $6.00.  Parents are welcome, but let us know if you plan to attend.

Turn in permission form and money for your student even if you plan to join us.

I thought we were done with owls, but they keep coming back.  A trunk full of owl “items” has arrived from the Boulder History Museum.  It has some scary looking things in it.  As soon as we can get the owls out of the way, we’ll have the dinosaurs move in.  Reports for the next two weeks are on dinosaurs.  Remember, students need to use their own words and be comfortable reading their report.  Keep it simple.  Thanks for your help and encouragement.

Grades 3-4
Mrs. Hansen

Europe tourist reports are due October 30th.  These reports are purely homework, but if your child needs internet access, we can arrange for some lab time if needed.  We are doing technical Geographical Knowledge of some countries in class.

Grades 5-6
Mrs. Hodgson

We are out of town!!  Grades 5-6 are at Glacier View Ranch at Outdoor School.  We hope to learn some exciting outdoor and team building skills.  We’ll be back tomorrow at the end of the school day.

We are finishing our unit on Ancient Greece.  We will have a test on Monday!  Tuesday will be our Ancient Greece Day!  We will have Olympic games (come in costume if you like!) in the morning and leave late morning for Denver.  We will be viewing the IMAX moving, Ancient Greece!

The recorder students have been invited to perform this Saturday, October 7 at the Boulder SDA Church. A memo and map was sent home on Monday, but a second copy is in today’s folder.

Remember -- students have until this Friday to notify Ms. Schneider and Mrs. Carlisle if they are not continuing in music.

Fifth grade passport ski applications are in their folder.  This is a program to ski for free!  Parents need to fill out the application and return it to the school.  I will take care of the rest!

Book orders are due on Wednesday, October 11.

Grades 7-10

Mr. Force and Mr. Pauls

Mile High
5 students
Oct. 25th -- 8:00 a.m. – noon

Ms. Schneider will speak with the students that are testing and encourage them to arrange carpooling and also let them know the date that they will be testing.  The cost for the test is $12.00.

Life skills:  This week we are focusing on having a positive attitude. We are encouraging our students to be positive and uplifting to one another.

Mr. Wuerfel:

Parents:
The week has gone well! So far students, for the most part, are exceeding my expectations with the given literature. The seventh and eighth graders are devouring the Animal Farm and making very intellectual comments online.

The ninth and tenth graders are still pushing through Great Expectations. Most of the students have grown accustomed to Dickens’ descriptive style and over characterization of various characters in the novel.

IMPORTANT: The Vista Ridge Drama Team will be presenting a play at the Denver First Youth Rally at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night. Be there and support our kids!

Lastly, if you have not seen your student/s with a three-ring binder bearing all of their journals, quizzes, tests, and notes, there could be trouble. The three-ring notebook is there to help them stay organized and prepared for tests. They will be graded on their organization as well as all their components to the journal.

Bible and History 7 – 11:

The students took their first test on Friday.  We called it our Mini Mid-Term practice test.  The students learned how to prepare for the test, how to study for the test, and how to write answers for different kinds of questions.  The different kinds of questions required a different kind of answer.  The question styles were:  define, short answer, fill in the blank, explain and essay.  Most all of the students worked hard and earned an “A” on the test.  CONGRATULATIONS  to all of you!

Fine Arts
Mrs. Carlisle & Mrs. Force

With our larger enrollment and expansion of our academy, we are running into some logistical issues with some of our school programs.  Since our Christmas program has been running too long we have decided to split up the program.  Here is the added program dates along with the groups that will be performing each evening.

December 7th December 13th
K-2 Choir 7-11 Choir
3-6 Choir 7-11 Chimes
Recorder Choir Strings Choir
Band Drama

Please make a note on your calendar that the program on the 7th has been added and plan now to attend the program in which your student is involved!

Our K-2 choir will be performing tomorrow morning during chapel.  All parents are welcome to come and listen as they share their song – Jump for Joy!  Chapel begins at 8:15 a.m.

Video & Editing

Attention All Parents!

Your help is needed to make the “Year End” video the best ever.  Every year we struggle to have enough videos of the lower grade’s events.

If you have a video camera and are willing to be responsible for taking videos of class events, please let the office know.  If you have a video camera that uses mini-dvd tapes and would like to donate it to the school, the video editing class would be excited to make use of it.

Picture Day is October 5

Picture Day is coming!  Do you need a haircut? Facial? New Outfit?  Come prepared to smile your best – and remember the dress code. These pictures do end up in the school yearbook, so we are asking that each student’s shirt has a collar.

If you would like to have your child’s picture taken in that special outfit, no problem, we will allow them to change and have their picture again.

Please bring order forms with check!

Europe Trip

There is a meeting on October 5, 2006, starting at 5:00 p.m. in the VRA Library.

Urgent!  Please attend as there are important decisions to be made regarding this trip!

It is time to get your passports!  Passport applications can be obtained at most Post Offices!

The October payment is overdue!  Please turn it in immediately.

Parent – Teacher Conferences

The end of the first quarter is coming up quickly!  October 25th is the scheduled day for Parent – Teacher Conferences.  In the past this has been a half-day of school.  However, with a greater volume of students (Yea!) we have found the need to go to a full day of conferences.  The conference times will begin at 10:00 a.m. and go until 6:00 p.m.  Please call or drop by the front office to schedule an appointment.  One other change that we have made is that we are requiring the student to be present for the conference.  If you are new to the concept of parent-teacher conferences, this is when the parents meet with their student’s teacher and receive a grade and progress report on their student.  It is a great time to get to know your child’s teacher(s) better and to share concerns and appreciation.

New Security Procedures

In light of the recent happenings in our world, we have decided to tighten up our security.  Our back door, which has remained open during the day, will only be open now during recess so our students have access to the restrooms.  For the rest of the time, it will remain locked.  We are working to establish an intruder alert procedure and will be practicing this with our students.  In the meantime, the front office will be extra vigilant in keeping watch on our front entry.

Lost and Found

Our lost and found pile is growing by leaps and bounds!  We will be taking care of these items similar to the way we did last year.  Debbie Smith will be in charge of the items.  If your student’s things are clearly marked with their name, Debbie will see that it is returned to them.  If you would like to ask her about a certain item, please give her a call at (303) 469-8043.  Items will be displayed in the school lobby at the end of each month beginning with October.
