Classroom News

Kindergarten
Mrs. Tusken

We had a great day yesterday celebrating our 100th day of school.  We saw some pretty neat collections of 100 things. For example, Baylor brought 100 Hot Wheels and Madison F. brought 50 hugs and 50 kisses (chocolate)! Each student also received a $100 bill with their picture on it!!  (I wish it was that easy to make real money!!)

Our field trip to the Boulder Ice Rink is next Monday!! We will be leaving around 9:15 and we should be back around 2:00.  The cost will be $4.00. The skating facility has been nice enough to give us lessons on falling and how to be safe on the ice. The rink is located on 13th street in Boulder.  The rink is outdoors, so please dress your child accordingly. We will be eating lunch there so, please pack a lunch that does not require the use of a microwave. I will need lots of parents to help with supervision, if you would like to come, please let me know!! Thanks.

Our sentence practice for this week is focusing on the following word: big.

There is hot lunch tomorrow!!!

We’re looking forward to an ice skating adventure on Monday February 6th.  It is easier to ice skate than to rollerskate, they tell me.  Parent volunteers are encouraged to join us.  We leave the school on the bus, at 9:15 and expect to return by 2:00.  Dress warmly and bring a lunch.  Charge for rental + skating is $4.00.

Reports for the next two weeks are to be on the subject of dental health.

We are currently studying about animals and ecosystems in science.  Since it is such a large/diverse subject, I would like to provide the students with an opportunity to do a research paper on any animal of their choice.  I have excluded pets and farm animals because I want them to research an animal that they are interested in but do not have much knowledge about.  The students can use the Internet or encyclopedias depending on availability.  We only have two Classroom computers, so if possible, I would like them to do the bulk of their research at home since most/all have access to a family computer.  I have given them a great website for children to get them started, but others may be available.  The address for this website is: sunsite.berkeley.edu/kidsclick!  No www. is necessary.  I will be giving the students a worksheet today to help guide them through the process and give them direction.  A project deadline has not been set, but it will most likely be around the middle of February, around the 17th.  I would prefer that these reports be typed since they give the students word processing practice and are much neater and easier to read.  I would appreciate it if you could oversee their work at home and to ensure that it gets started and completed.  Thanks for your help.  If you have any questions, please let me know.

Grades 5-6
Mrs. Hodgson

Many students do not have an adequate supply of notebook paper or pencils.  Please make sure your child has the supplies he needs.  I prefer paper that doesn’t have to be torn out of a spiral notebook!

Outlines are due this Thursday for the Social Studies states projects.

Our money management unit is underway.  Students signed rental agreements yesterday to rent their desks.  Employment contracts were signed last week.  Pay day is Friday!

Tests this week will be on Friday:   Spelling and the Memory Verse (Psalm 138:3). There will be a math test next week.

Essays are being handed in and debates are more and more heated! The ninth and tenth graders have finished their final practice essays and will begin working on the To Kill a Mockingbird persuasive essays. Each student is going to have a lot of work ahead of them so if they say the phrase “I don’t have anything to do tonight” know that they probably do.

In Geography we are studying the Canadian Provinces. Each group has been assigned two and will present their information on Thursday. Along with their oral presentation they are making “gourmet” dishes that one would find while visiting the area. It’s going to be a savory experience=)

On Monday, February 6th, the ninth and tenth graders will be visiting the College Hill library at Front Range Community College.  They will be given a tour of the library as well as a hand-on class about finding information on the internet.  The focus will be on validating information and finding reliable sources for research.

The seventh and eighth graders have begun a revolution! They have time warped into a time in our history where we as Americans defined ourselves and created a new world and government. This is a fun unit that will help them understand where we came from how we got here.

Note to parents: Many of my students have come to class unprepared to work. They must have a writing utensil and paper.

Also, we will have vespers, GLO, on the 24th of February from 7-9 p.m. This is a completely student led event so please bring them out! We will  bring in the Sabbath by creatively inviting God into our lives through music, snacks, prayer, and fellowship.

Ski Day: Wednesday, Feb. 15.   Grades 5-10.

Girls Slumber Party:  The girls in grades 7-10 are invited to a slumber party at Miss Schneider’s house on Saturday, February 11.  Please bring $3 to contribute to the food.  The party will start at 6 pm.  The girls need to be picked up on Sunday by 1 pm.  If you need more information about this activity, please contact Miss Schneider.

FYI:
Many of your children spend time on a Web site called MySpace.com.  This is a site where people from all over post pictures, usually of themselves, and fill out a profile containing personal information about themselves.  It allows your children to not only post their profiles but then they are able to connect and write to anybody on the Web site using either e-mail or instant messaging.

As we have warned before, because of the anonymity of the internet, no one can be sure that anything written is true. Also, because of the anonymity, some of the material written and the way it is presented is less than uplifting.
If you haven’t seen the site or your child’s profile, I strongly urge you to take a look.  The easiest way to do so would be to have your child log on and ask them to give you a tour of where they’ve been and who is on their “friends list”.  Look at some of the friends’ profiles.  There is also a place to check what they have been writing to each other.  If you need to, you can sign up for a profile of your own (It’s free) and search your child’s name or the name of their friends.

The nature of the internet is such that it is easy to deceive and easy to make contact, even when none is desired.  Even trustworthy people can’t control the material to which they would be exposed. I always find it better to err on the side of safety and innocence.

Talent Show

The 2nd annual student Talent Show is coming up on Saturday, February 18th.  This was a huge success last year!  There are limited spots available so sign up early.  All interested participants can sign up in the office.  The first set of auditions will be held on Friday, February 3.  We are looking for comedy, singing, musical instruments, groups, gymnastics, etc., etc., etc.  Whatever talent you have, it might be worth some money!  If you have any questions, please contact Ivy Lee at 720-890-4875.

Attention Parents!

There are a number of items we sell here at school.  Candy, drinks, pizza, and snack shack items.  The money envelopes were originally for the pizza but are being used for other items.  Please notify the office if you want these funds used for a specific purpose or if you want to limit the consumption.

Basketball

The basketball games against Cedarwood went great last Friday.  The girls played very well but lost by 6 points in spite of the great team effort.  The guys won their game.  The practice is really paying off.

This Friday we will scrimmage with Chariot.  Since they do not have an actual team, we will just mix together and play a fun game.
