Classroom News

Kindergarten
Mrs. Tusken

I hope everyone enjoyed the mini-vacation. Over the vacation, Tommy’s family was blessed with a new baby sister!! Congratulations!!  We can’t wait to meet her!

This week we are learning about winter animals (hibernation) and penguins!

January 30 will be the 100th day of school.  I would like to celebrate this accomplishment with a “100th Day Party.” I am asking for each child to get creative and bring 100 items of something. It can be unusual items, something to share with the class, pretty much anything as long as it equals 100. We will have prizes to give away!!  Speaking of prizes, I have started a new reward system. Each child will be rewarded on Friday if they have kept a green card all week.  The reward will be picking a prize out of the Treasure Box!! Yippie!  The students seem very excited. If you have questions about our new system, please let me know! I think it is going to work great!

Our sentence practice for this week focuses on the words and and to.

We have a field trip coming up, so mark your calendars now! We will be going ice skating with Mrs. Gaines’ class on Feb.6.  There will be more details to follow in future newsletters!

Grades 1-2
Mrs. Gaines

We have had lots of coughs and colds so remind your students to wash hands with soap and water or use disinfectant wipes.  Reader’s Digest says children touch their nose or mouth 30 times each minute.  I wouldn’t want to count.

Show & tell this week and next.  Bring an item in a bag with 3 clues written out to help us guess what it is.

Get your ideas ready for the 100th Day celebration on January 30.  Bring an item and wear something special!

Plan on an ice skating trip with the kindergarten class on February 6.

Grades 3-4

Some of the students have mentioned that they have already started using flash cards to memorize their times tables.  If you have not yet started this activity with your child, I encourage you to make every effort to do so.  Again, I can’t emphasize enough how important it is that this skill be learned as quickly as possible.  It will truly make math easier, more fun, and much quicker to do.  Last week I saw some real improvement on some of the math scores for students who took the second test.  Two students improved their scores by 20% and one increased their score by 30%!  Congratulations and keep up the good work.

Grades 5-6
Mrs. Hodgson

It is always nice to start a fresh quarter!  Everyone started the day with 100% in every subject.  Now it’s up to the students to decide whether or not to keep it there!

There will be no grade reports for the first couple of weeks as we get started into the new quarter.

We will be starting a money management unit that will last for the remainder of the year.  More information will follow as we begin the program.

FYI:
Many of your children spend time on a Web site called MySpace.com.  This is a site where people from all over post pictures, usually of themselves, and fill out a profile containing personal information about themselves.  It allows your children to not only post their profiles but then they are able to connect and write to anybody on the Web site using either e-mail or instant messaging.

As we have warned before, because of the anonymity of the internet, no one can be sure that anything written is true. Also, because of the anonymity, some of the material written and the way it is presented is less than uplifting.

If you haven’t seen the site or your child’s profile, I strongly urge you to take a look.  The easiest way to do so would be to have your child log on and ask them to give you a tour of where they’ve been and who is on their “friends list.”  Look at some of the friends’ profiles.  There is also a place to check what they have been writing to each other.  If you need to, you can sign up for a profile of your own (it’s free) and search your child’s name or the name of their friends.

The nature of the internet is such that it is easy to deceive and easy to make contact, even when none is desired.  Even trustworthy people can’t control the material to which they would be exposed. I always find it better to err on the side of safety and innocence.

Mr. Pauls
