Classroom News

Kindergarten
Mrs. Tusken

Happy New Year everyone!  We celebrated the holiday by writing out our goals for the New Year! Some of the examples the students wrote were to go to bed on time and read 3 books by the end of the year!!

Our themes for this month are winter, mittens, snowman, Martin Luther King Jr., animals in winter (hibernation), penguins, and dental health. This week we are talking about the winter season and ending with the theme of mittens.

Our Literature Connection for this week is “The Mitten” by Jan Brett.

I have sent home a new sentence practice; our words this week are pink and can.

Wasn’t the Christmas Break just wonderful!  It was sure good to see the happy enthusiastic faces on Monday though.

Although the weather has been unseasonably mild, jackets are recommended for recess.  Give your child a reminder as they leave the house in the morning.

Our good friend Rebecca and her family have moved to Texas.  We will miss her and we’ll keep in touch with letters and e-mail.

We are using this week and next to catch up on back reports.  For those who have not kept up, a report on either the human body or a weather system are expected.

No hot lunch tomorrow.  If the weather cooperates, we will walk to the park.  That means no microwave items.

Grades 3-4
Mr. Breese

Our first day back from vacation was a good day. I am happy to be here with you and I am looking forward to the rest of the year.

Enclosed in the folder is a letter to parents for your information.  I am looking forward to meeting each of you.

We are still studying the states and capitals and I have added two more to the list, Nebraska and Nevada.

Happy New Year!  We toasted in the new year yesterday with sparkling cider and “Toast Monday”.  We also welcomed a new fifth grade student:  Miguel Garcia!  We are planning to do our best to finish out second quarter and then begin anew for third quarter.  Second quarter officially ends on January 13.  School will be closed on Monday, January 16 in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Social Studies projects were due Monday and Tuesday, but students were given a grace period if they did not finish them before (or during) Christmas Break.  The new deadline for presentations is Tuesday, January 10.  Students who were prepared this Monday or Tuesday were awarded extra credit points.

Students needing additional tutoring are welcome to stay after school on the following days:  Mondays until 4:30 p.m.; Wednesdays until 4:00 p.m.; and Fridays until 1:00 p.m. (when VRA has a scheduled home game).

Upcoming tests:  Spelling, Memory Verse, and Math on Friday; Social Studies States and Capitals quiz for Western/Southwestern States on Monday.

Progress report on
Box Tops and Campbell’s

We did it! We already turned in enough labels and bonuses in the Campbell’s Labels for Education program to qualify for our goal: a 24-foot play parachute canopy for the younger grades. It should be delivered in January.
The parachute required 6,000 labels, but we still have 3,044 label points “banked” with the program. At this rate, we'll be able to order another item this year, and it won't cost us any money.
Please continue to save every Campbell’s label. If you’re not sure what part to save from some products, look for the tiny “Labels for Education” logo. It often says “save label,” “save lid,” or “save UPC.” To save the label, simply slice it off the can. Also, look at the end of grocery receipts for any bonuses.
The Box Tops for Education program is totally separate, and it rewards our school with two payments a year. We just submitted 950 Box Tops, so VRA will receive a check for $95 in December. Look for the “Box Tops for Education” squares on grocery items, and save each one.
Ask relatives if they would also save Box Tops and Campbell’s labels for VRA. The rewards from these programs directly benefit our students. If you have any questions, call Jennifer Jas at 303-460-9272.
