Classroom News

Kindergarten
Mrs. Tusken

It’s officially Fall in the Kindergarten classroom. We have so many fun themes planned for this month! (I just love this time of year!!) The first theme we are focusing on is the season Fall. Next week we will learn about pumpkins and visit a Pumpkin Patch! Our other themes throughout the month will be monsters, bats, and spiders!

I need each child to bring in the following:
-1 leaf (this week)
-1 plain LIGHT colored shirt that we can PAINT on
(I need the shirt by next week)

Our literature connection this week is “Why Do Leaves Change Color?” by Betsy Maestro and “Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf” by Lois Ehlert.

I have sent home a permission slip for our field trip to the Pumpkin Patch on Weds. 12. If you would like to come along and supervise, please let me know.

For homework I have included a sentence list in your child’s folder to help review our site words. Please practice these sentences with your child!!

Thanks for all contributors to Snack Shack. Business has been booming! Best sellers are cupcakes and chocolate milk.

We’re planning a field trip to the Anderson Farm on Wednesday, October 12 th. Along with the kindergartners and Mr. Britt, we look forward to a fun filled day. We are looking for parents to join us. Younger siblings are welcome along with either mom or dad. Permission slips will soon be coming home.

Last week’s Stone Soup was super fantastic for those willing to risk it. For some it was super scary soup. We’ll attempt to make phony fossils later this week as our culminating activity for the geology unit. The recipe will be sent home for those wanting to give it a try.

Grades 3-4
Mrs. Morgan

This week our class has been exploring the density of salt water and fresh water and looking at the dark and light zones of the ocean. We decided that our classroom (and it’s unique creatures) is/are definitely in the light zone. It has been so much fun learning about the underwater world God made for us. Our next exciting discoveries will be about the geology that makes up the underwater world and the shore around it.

Just a reminder about our upcoming program at the Chapel Haven SDA Church. We are working on a few surprises for that program. Also, last week, I was able to get a sneak preview of some of the choir songs when I visited that class. I must confess (unbiased of course) that the 3 rd and 4 th Grade Choir sounded OUTSTANDING!! You will not want to miss their debut on October 22!

Grades 5-6
Mrs. Hodgson

The students did an excellent job preparing, cooking, and cleaning last Tuesday for Hot Lunch. We are giving all the profit from our first Hot Lunch to the Katrina Fund.

There was a Math test today. Next week we will have Science and Social Studies tests.

The Crop Walk is this Sunday. Parents of students participating will be notified by phone with further information. If you can't help this time, watch for other opportunities for community outreach during the year.

Please come prepared for cold weather. We will go outside for fresh air as long as it isn’t wet.

Grades 7-8

7th – 8th Grade Classroom: We are going to be starting a section of our Reading class where we focus on a single book. Students must have their book at school by Monday so that we can begin our project. Books may be purchase, borrowed, or checked out from the library. Each student must one of the following books:

  • Little Women: Louisa May Alcott
  • Flee the Captor: Herb Ford
  • Little House on the Prairie (Any book)
  • Chronicles of Narnia: C.S. Lewis (Any book)
  • Anne of Green Gables
  • Where the Red Fern Grows
  • Tom Sawyer
  • Huckleberry Finn

Grades 9-10
Mr. Wuerfel

Everything has been going exceptional and learning is definitely taking place.

The English classes have finished their short story reading and are about to begin writing their own. There will be a short story writing contest in which one student will win a free dinner with Mr. Wuerfel and a friend of their choice. The rest of the stories will be compiled in a book and available for purchase for friends, family, and acquaintances.

In History we are continuing our “time warping”. Each student has become a special explorer and is reporting on their journeys this week.

Last but not least is Bible. The students have been writing Exegesis papers on their selected verse. All in all, we’ve had a great week!

Home & School to host Pancake Breakfast!

Our fall fundraising efforts have been very successful! We are continuing to send out fundraiser letters as well as sell the Family Fun Packs.

Home & School will be hosting a Pancake Breakfast on Fri, Oct. 14th, for all students who have sent out at least 6 fundraiser letters (or, 10 per family). Please see your child’s teacher for more information. Students who have sold at least 5 Family Fun Packs will also be eligible for the Pancake Breakfast. Our Goal is to raise $7,500.00 by the end of October. With our matching grant our total would be $15,000.00. If we can raise these funds, our running track will be installed this Summer!

If you have any questions regarding the fundraiser, please call the school office at 303-828-4944 or Ivy Lee at 720-890-4875.

EARN 200 BONUS LABELS FOR VRA!

Today is the last day to help VRA take advantage of a valuable bonus from Campbell’s Labels for Education. Use your Safeway Club Card and buy eight participating products between 9/01 and 10/04. You will receive a certificate for 200 bonus labels at the bottom of your receipt. Cut it out and put it in this Campbell’s bin in the school office. A 200-label bonus is equal to buying 200 Campbell’s products!

Participating products are: any Campbell’s condensed soup, V8 Splash juice, Soup at Hand, Prego Pasta Sauce, Campbell’s Supper Bakes Meal Kit, Pepperidge Farm Chocolate Chunk Cookies and Pepperidge Farm Mini Cookies. Everyone who participates is automatically entered in a national sweepstakes to win an e-Mac computer.

Our collections of Campbell’s Labels for Education and Box Tops for Education are growing. We are earning a play parachute and other classroom supplies. Every label helps VRA!

Box Tops for Education

Help VRA earn cash and a play parachute.

Bring in all your Box Tops for Education and Campbell's Labels! Vista Ridge Academy participates in two programs that earn free money and supplies for our school.

Box Tops for Education

Cut the "Box Tops for Education" squares off grocery items and put them in the Box Tops bowl in the school office. VRA receives 10 cents for each one. So far, we have earned about $325. Our goal this year is to submit 3,000 Box Tops and earn $300. We'll keep you posted when we have a specific item we want to purchase with that money.

Campbell 's Labels for Education

Cut off the label from all Campbell's products (or save the lid on certain items), and put them in the collection bin in the school office. VRA can use them to "purchase" items for our school. Our goal this year is to purchase a 24-foot colorful play parachute for the younger grades. We'll need at least 2,200 more labels this year.

Watch your grocery receipts for bonuses and Labels for Education promotions listed at the end.

Thank you for your help!
